In 1994 Orton completed the CICA In Depth Tax Course. In the same year he accepted employment with the firm Tingle Reid and Olson (later Olson Reid), where he practiced for 3 years in the areas of tax dispute resolution, and tax and estate planning and implementation, primarily for closely held businesses, doctors, dentists, and emigrants to the US.

Beginning in 1997 Orton Minor Professional Corporation was retained as an independent contractor with the firm Shea Nerland Calnan, where Orton practiced primarily in the areas of tax dispute resolution and tax and estate planning and implementation for owner managers, professionals, investors, and closely held businesses.

Orton Minor Professional Corporation concluded the contract arrangement with Shea Nerland Calnan in the summer of 2001. Orton continues to practice through Orton Minor Professional Corporation in the areas of tax and estate planning, corporations, partnerships, and trusts for individuals and private businesses.
